Making Christmas traditions all your own!

Hey, everybody! Reader here.

As the Christmas decorations come out, and we all get ready to celebrate the holidays, I was reminded of some little Christmas traditions we have in my family, especially among me and my brothers.

One is when getting the cranberries ready. If you’re able to get the whole thing to come out of the can intact, without having to reach in with a spoon to dig some out, you earn “CREDIT!”

“CREDIT!!!” (For fans of “The Simpsons,” this is also known as “Cranberries a la Bart!”

Another little tradition we have is that we don’t open our main gifts until everyone is awake and ready to go. The stockings and stocking stuffers, however, are fair game, and you don’t have to wait on those.

But another of my favourite traditions is one my brothers and I have done since we were kids.

Over the years, my Mom has collected lots of little buildings and figures, to create a nice little Christmas village. Each year, it takes over the top of our buffet cabinet, and makes a nice little picturesque scene. And it’s lovely.

However, my brothers and I took it upon ourselves to add our own touches to it.

By that, I mean we add many unexpected figures and creatures to it, to make it our own.

That’s right. We’ve added a “Town Square Smackdown,” featuring legendary WWE superstars Ultimate Warrior and “Macho Man” Randy Savage, along with menacing creatures and army men creating havoc. We even have dinosaurs lurking about the idyllic Christmas village!

Untraditional? Of course. But it’s fun and adds a personal touch to the Christmas proceedings that you’ll only find at the Read house.

Of course, my nieces Abbie and Brynn were horrified and thought it was terrible. (They just don’t get boys and their toys! Haha!) We just invited them to think outside the box, and if they come up with any additions they’d like to introduce to the village, they’re more than welcome to do so.

I think of it like Jazz… sometimes you have to improvise and use your imagination!

That’s the great thing about holiday traditions. Many families have similar customs, but when you can personalize your own, that makes it even more special and fun!

Creating your own Christmas traditions is the perfect way to add some personal flair and relaxed fun to the festivities. Whether it’s cozy movie nights, baking those favorite cookies, or something totally new, these moments are what make the holidays special.

I’d love to hear about some of your traditions! In the meantime, here’s another of my all-time favourite Christmas tunes!
