Hey, everybody! Reader here, and I want to know… What’s your go-to, when you need a good laugh?
For me, I have TV shows, like my all-time favourite “The Simpsons”and sketch comedy classic “Mr. Show,” along with hilarious movies like the original “Naked Gun,” “Airplane,” “Anchorman,” and the underrated gangster spoof “Johnny Dangerously.”
But for me, above all, the topper might be the legendary Monty Python.
For a while, I’ve been wanting to add the Blu-Ray set of the original BBC programme, “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” to my collection, and I’d usually see it in stores for around $90 to $100. But a few weeks ago, while I was home on vacation, while I was in Saskatoon, I found it on sale for half price. 50 bucks for that gem? I took that as a sign… Consider it sold.
And now, it’s been added to my Python DVD collection, with includes all their feature films, some documentary and specials, and some sketch compilations.
In addition to that, I have several Python CDs, featuring classic sketches and many of their musical moments, often springing from the minds of Eric Idle and frequent collaborator Neil Innes.
I even have a few different pieces of Python-related reading material!
One of my favourite sketches, is one I’ve made a tradition out of over the years. Rarely is there an election night go by, that I don’t catch Python’s “Election Night Special,” which does a wonderful job of capturing the general absurdity and nonsense surrounding politics.
What I love most about Python, is that they combine the intelligent with the stupid, like few others have managed.
For example, how about this mash-up of the excitement of soccer and the academia of philosophy…
And of course, on the big screen, there were many memorable Python moments, but few are more iconic that King Arthur’s run-in with the Black Knight, in “Month Python and the Holy Grail.”
There have been losses over the years, as Python members Graham Chapman and Terry Jones have passed away, while John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam remain. However, even if the surviving members don’t reunite to do anything else going forward, they’ve created a legendary body of work, that has made millions of fans (like me), laugh uproariously!
I’ll leave you with this sage piece of advice from “Life of Brian.” Enjoy!
