Reader here! The other day, I was walking downtown and noticed that “A Minecraft Movie” is playing this week at the Tower Theatre in Yorkton.
Now, this movie had a huge opening weekend. How big? Well, it set a record for the biggest opening weekend ever, for a movie based on a video game, raking in almost $163-million at the box office, surpassing the 2023’s “The Super Mario Bros.” Movie!
Now, the critics haven’t been kind to this movie, though isn’t that pretty much always the case with a film like this?
Grayson saw it opening weekend, and said it was hard to categorize.
I admit, I don’t know all the ins and outs of “Minecraft.” My exposure to it comes through watching my nieces and nephew play the video game over the years.
All I know is that the game is kinda free-form, with whomever is at the controls able to basically create a world only limited by their imaginations.
Judging by the trailer, the movie looks like it’s pretty fun!
I mean, Jack Black and Jason Momoa definitely seen like a fun on-screen pair!
I might just have to check this one out.
It got me thinking, though… there have been a number of movies based on video games over the years, from “Street Fighter” and “Mortal Kombat,” to “Uncharted” and “Tomb Raiders.
What is your favourite?
For me? I love the “Silent Hill” games, especially the 1999 original. And in 2006, the series was adapted to the big screen. The movie wasn’t perfect, but all in all, they captured much of the creepy atmosphere of the games perfectly!
Another series I’d like to see in theatres, is “Yakuza,” a game series based on the world of the Japanese mafia. The games are a lot of fun. You get caught up in the story, there’s lot’s of fighting, side quests and mini games. And the characters are pretty cool, too!
I’ve seen a Japanese movie based on the game, that’s kind of cartoony. And on Prime Video, there’s a TV adaptation, that I have yet to watch, but will definitely check out.
I’m sure it’ll be great, but I’d love to see a version of this on the silver screen!
