The silly things that make Reader smile!

By Craig Reader Apr 2, 2025 | 8:24 PM

Hey. everybody!  Reader here!

I know I’m a grown-up, but I firmly believe in keeping that youthful spark alive.  Otherwise, things would get super boring, am I right?

One way I do that, is to find silly objects that make me smile and laugh, and bring me a bit of joy.

Maybe they’re funnier to me than they would be to other people, but that’s not for me to judge.

For example over the years, I’ve found a pair of “Mr. Sparkle” socks (from “The Simpsons”) and a poop emoji pillow

The socks I found several years ago while at a store in Calgary’s Chinook Centre Mall.  I stumbled upon them while browsing, and I had to have them  Possibly the best 10 bucks I’ve ever spent!

Of course, they’re inspired by this bit of Simpsons silliness, when Homer finds a mysterious box with his likeness on it, while rummaging with Bart and Lisa at the dump!

The poop emoji pillow?  I happened across that at the convenience store next to the station a few years ago, and one impulse buy later, and it was soon adorning the shelf above my desk in the newsroom, where it’s remained ever since.

But perhaps my favourite nonsensical impulse purchase was something I found at the 24/7 Travel Centre in Dafoe a few years ago, while on a road trip home to the farm.  I found this:

That’s right… a George Takei talking pen!

Ohhhhh myyyyyy!

We all have things that just make us laugh.  They serve no other purpose, but to make us happy.  And that’s okay!

Why are these silly, dumb little things that make us happy so important?

These “dumb” objects are tiny treasures that spark happiness and nostalgia, triggering good memories, and reminding us to find delight in the simple things.  Whether it’s a cute keychain, funny fridge magnet, a whimsical mug, a goofy pair of socks or even a poop emoji pillow, they add a splash of color and a smile to our day.  They can lighten the mood and give us a chuckle when we need it.  So, let’s celebrate the little things that make life a bit brighter!
