There’s something about a great “bad” song!

Reader here!  Today, I wanted to touch on some of my favourite bad songs.

I’m not talking about the songs that you hear every day, that you’re just not a fan of, that sometimes have goofy lyrics or annoying sounds that burrow their way into your brain and drive you nuts.

Oh no.

I want to put the spotlight on a couple of my favourite fictional bad songs from the the big and small screens.

Movies and TV shows have a way of coming up with tunes that are so bad that they become instantly iconic, and we can’t help but love them for it!  Whether it’s the awkward dance numbers, hilariously off-key singing, or the delightfully cheesy lyrics, these songs become unforgettable earworms that have a special place in our hearts.

Of course, there’s the more recognizable numbers, like Phoebe Buffay’s quirky little coffee house favourite “Smelly Cat” from *Friends,” or Robin Sparkles’ throwback 80’s Canadian pop anthem “Let’s Go to the Mall” from *How I Met Your Mother,” which took us on a hilariously nostalgic trip back to the supposedly ’80s world of Canadian pop?

My all-time favourite show, “The Simpsons,” has created enough of these  tunes to fill a column on its own, but I want to spotlight my favourite – the sad love song Kirk Van Houten wrote to his estranged wife Luann… “Can I Borrow a Feeling?”

Just brutal, but glorious all the same time!

One of my former co-workers made me this, and in makes me happy seeing it sitting on the shelf above my desk in the news room!

And there’s one more I want to give a special mention to.  If you’ve seen “Boogie Nights,” you know what I’m talking about.

Remember when Jack Horner fired Dirk Diggler and he decided to go off with his partner in crime Reed Rothchild, and become would-be ’80s rock stars?

They thought they had the goods.  Boy, were they wrong.  “You Got the Touch?”  No Dirk… you don’t!

Just awful, but amazing, too!

Kudos to Mark Wahlberg, because I think it might be harder to sing badly on purpose, than it is to simply sing something well!

These songs might not top the charts, but there are so many mmore examples beyond these two, that top our lists of guilty pleasures.

So, what’s your all-time favorite cringe-worthy TV song that you secretly love?
