Now that the snow’s here to stay, I figured it’s time to re-up the emergency kit in my car just to be safe, and maybe give you some ideas of what to put in yours!
1. Number one on the list, you wanna stay warm. If you don’t keep a toque and mitts in your jacket, then keeping it in the car is the next best thing! Some sort of scarf or muffler is a good idea too, and if you’ve got the space (or just wanna be cozy lol) you can tuck a nice blanket in too. Handwarmers are also a lifesaver, especially if you’re gonna be in and out of the car.
2. A first-aid kit, hopefully never useful, but you’ll want it when it is. Nothing fancy needed here, bandages, pain relievers, antiseptics. (I’ve even heard you can use that rubbing alcohol to defrost your windshield in a pinch, but YMMV)
3. I’m probably not gonna blow your mind when I say tools are a must-have. Shovel, jumper cables, flashlight, tire iron, etc etc, you already know what tools are.
4. Visibility gear. Getting stuck in a ditch sucks, doubly so when you’re in a blizzard. The only thing that can make it much worse is somebody crashing into you in the ditch; be ready with some warning triangles, LEDs, and a hi-vis vest goes a long way when you need to change your tires in poor visibility.
5. Snacks. I’m adding these mostly as a formality lol. If you’re anything like me, they’ll be eaten the first time you have to drive more than an hour somewhere, but if you’ve got more backbone than a sponge you probably won’t run into that problem. (or if you’re forgetful; the last time my dad went to Calgary he found a pack he’d stashed for a snow day haha)
And the last one, I don’t actually include in my kit. A charger bank. I’ve heard that leaving those out in the cold can drain the battery, so imo it’s a better idea to just keep one in your coat pocket, or plugged into the cigarette lighter so you’re good to go when you need it.
So that’s it, there’s my emergency kit laid out for you. If I missed something you keep in yours, let me know on wherever you clicked in to this from, or shoot us a text at 306 783 3699!
