Van Halen’s ‘No Brown M&Ms’ Demand? Just a Rock ‘n’ Roll Prank!

In his memoir Brothers, Alex Van Halen reveals that the band’s infamous tour rider request to remove brown M&M’s wasn’t a serious demand but a way to ensure venues paid attention to their detailed safety requirements. He admits that while the band played along with the rumors in interviews, the request wasn’t about being difficult, but a test to see if their other, more important demands were being met. He explains that if they saw brown M&M’s, they knew the venue might be cutting corners elsewhere. Van Halen also shares stories of rock stars like Ozzy Osbourne and Chris Cornell nearly joining the band.
