Reader here! As I mentioned, this is my first week back in the office after a couple of weeks off.
I spent most of that time home at the farm near Conquest. But, in the middle, I did make a quick trip back to Yorkton for the Health Foundation Charity Road Race, on August 18th. After doing the “Learn to Run” clinics throughout May and June, it was go time!
Now, since the run clinics wrapped up, admittedly, I didn’t get back out running until race day. But that’s okay. I figured my training and muscle memory would carry me through! But, on race day, another wrinkle popped up…
That’s right, I tossed and turned all night, and didn’t get a minute of sleep before the race. Not ideal, but I made it work!
I arrived at the Yorkton Regional High School, got stretched out, and prepared to run.
First, the Kids’ 2K run got the festivities going!
Once the 2K wrapped up, it was time for the 5K, 10K and walkers to take our lace at the starting line.
Aided by a playlist of choice cuts by Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, I set off at a nice jog, wit a goal of keeping up that pace for the entire five kilometres, without having to slow up to walk.
Well, mission accomplished!
Overall, for running on no sleep, I’d say I did pretty well! I guess the goal for next year is to finish in under 39 minutes, and set a personal best!
Once the race was run, it was time to celebrate and enjoy a little breakfast!
In all, 163 participants, including 112 runners and 51 walkers took part, raising a grand total of $22,320, to help the Health Foundation of East Central Saskatchewan purchase new equipment for the Yorkton Regional Health Centre!
And a shoutout to the top individual fundraiser, Geoff Propp, who raised an amazing $12,040! Well done, Geoff!
A big THANK YOU to everyone who took to the course to run or walk the race, as well as Ross and Debbie from the Health Foundation, Coach Bernie Wlock and his fellow coaches who put us through our paces during the “Learn to Run” clinics, and, of course, all the volunteers and sponsors who made this year’s Charity Road Race another great success!
It was a blast as always – I’m already looking forward to next year!
