Robo-Dentist Makes History with World’s First Fully Automated Dental Procedure

By Harvard Media Aug 7, 2024 | 5:00 AM

Hold on to your toothbrushes, folks! A Boston-based tech company, backed by none other than Mark Zuckerberg’s dentist dad, has just pulled off the world’s first all-robotic dental procedure. Perceptive, using AI imaging software and a robotic arm, has taken a major bite out of the future of dental care. The groundbreaking treatment in Barranquilla, Colombia, saw the bot drilling and shaving down a person’s tooth all on its own—talk about a real “cutting” edge technology!

The company aims to have these bots placing crowns and performing similar procedures in just 15 minutes. Their high-tech method scans beneath the gumline and uses AI analysis before the robotic arms swing into action. Harvard’s Restorative Dentistry chair, German Galluicci, proudly touted the impressive stats: a whopping 90% accuracy rate compared to the mere 40% with traditional X-rays. Looks like we’re heading towards a future where even our dentists might get replaced by machines. Hope these robots know how to handle flossing!
